A traumatic brain injury (“TBI”) occurs when a person sustains a blow, bump, or jolt to the head, or a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move back and forth. This unforeseen movement causes damaging changes to the brain including chemical changes.

Even a minor jolt can cause a brain injury, which is referred to as a mild traumatic brain injury (“MTBI”).  An MTBI is defined by lesser levels of brain damage, as indicated by only brief or no loss of consciousness. Causes of traumatic brain injuries include:

  • Sports injury, including contact sports such as football, rugby, and boxing;
  • Slip and fall injury, resulting from the head hitting the ground;
  • Motor vehicle collisions, including rear-end collisions that cause the head to move violently and rapidly, sometimes (but not always) resulting in a loss of consciousness;
  • Birth injuries, including trauma to the brain brought about during the birthing process.
  • Product injuries, such as airbags, or falling objects typically in retail establishments.
  • Pedestrian injuries, often times result in traumatic impact to the brain.
  • Motorcycle accidents, given that helmets are not required in CT, can and do result in TBI and MTBI.
